A decade in the making: partnering with the Emirates Red Crescent

The University of Manchester Middle East Centre has partnered the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) since 2013 and supported various initiatives, ranging from education to food projects - a special focus during Ramadan. Every year, the Centre supports ERC’s Ramadan campaign initiatives and invites the regional community of students and alumni to volunteer and engage with these projects, wherever possible.

The Emirates Red Crescent is the arm of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for Humanitarian Work. Since its foundation in 1983, the UAE Red Crescent Authority has played a leading role in promoting different aspects of humanitarian work both at the domestic and international levels. Their main message is about mobilising the power of humanity to help the weak and the needy, wherever they are and regardless of any of ethnic, cultural, geographic or religious considerations.

Most recently, the Centre hosted the annual Middle East Student and Alumni Gala Dinner where all the proceeds from the ticket sales were donated to Emirates Red Crescent. The total amount donated (close to AED30,000 representing 100% of the sale proceeds) will support one of the ERC’s educational projects - "With Knowledge We Empower”. The generous donations will provide support to 250,000 students in various countries by meeting vital basic school needs (school supplies: bags, stationery, uniforms, devices) in addition to paying school and university tuition fees. Students and alumni were asked to make a minimum AED350 donation to charity for each place at the gala dinner, which was held at The One&Only Royal Mirage Hotel, Dubai.
